Eighth Generation and on

BARTON STONE HARLAN   1823-1869 -- Farmer

1823 - Born April 19, 1823 in Wayne Co., Indiana
1843 - Feb. 8, 1843 married Jane Ayers
Jane was born Aug. 20, 1824, in Darke Co., Ohio. She was daughter of
Alfred and Sardis (Ashley) Ayers - farmers. In 1836 she moved with her
parents to Randolph Co. Her schooling was limited- her only book was
the "Testament." Schools were few and far between. In today's terms she
was illiterate, but this lady is the connection to earlier ancestors who came
over on the Mayflower and back centuries in Europe.

Jane and Barton cleared forty acres of timber to hew out their farm.

1853 they sold that farm and moved to Tipton Co., Indiana where they bought
80 acres of land, later clearing it into ten and fifteen acre lots.

1864 After remaining on this farm, they sold their possessions and moved to
Alden, Hardin Co., Iowa. Barton went by ox team, and the family came by
train to Marshalltown and then by wagon to Alden.
They purchased 160 acres near the little town of Gifford, Iowa.

1869 August 10, 1869 Barton died at the age of 46 in Alden, Iowa.
He was buried at the cemetery at Eldora.

Jane was left with eleven children and the twelfth was born three days after her father's death. The farm was worked by the sons, but one by one they married and left home. Iowa was becoming more crowded so they looked westward to the prairies of Nebraska. Most all the children moved to Furnas County, NE, so after 22 years, Jane departed for that destination, accompanied by her youngest daughter, Ida. She made her home with a son, Allen, who was still a bachelor at the time. Over the years, several of the children moved on to the Williamette Valley in Oregon.

1907 At the age of 83, Jane visited her family members there in and around
Corvallis. She returned to Holbrook, NE where she lived until her death.
1911 April 13, 1911 Jane died in Holbrook, Nebraska.

MY NOTE:
The next contiguous page entitled "Ninth Generation" will continue with the stories of those who are directly in line genealogically to our family. However, each name on this page "Eighth Generation" has a link to the histories of that branch of the family. If you take the time to read them, the stories are interesting as a piece of history as well as a connection to our relatives.
This is a break from the pattern of Mom's book.
