Ida May, 1867-1939; m. Cyrus Abija Stowe 1888; 6 children
1867 Ida May was born August 13, 1867 in Gifford, Iowa
1885 Ida attended Drake University for a year before her mother decided to
move to Nebraska. After attending "Normal Institute" (for teaching), she taught school
for three years before getting married.
1888 May 16, 1888 she married Cyrus Stowe, a farmer.
Cyrus was born in southern Illinois in 1863. He moved with his family at age seven to Yonkers, NY.
His parents separated in 1879 and his mother moved the family to Furnas Co., NE. He had a
sister and five brothers, some of which had infamous names. One was Thomas Jefferson, another
Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Barlymore, William Nelson, and John Pinkney. Mrs. Stowe bought
a claim and two brothers came ahead to build a three-room dugout on the claim before the rest of
the family came. They came by train to Bloomington, then by covered wagon to Holbrook.
When Ida and Cyrus married they moved into a sod house that his brother, Thomas Jefferson,
had built on their brother Alexander's original homestead. They built a new sod house later and
then a nice frame home where they lived until retirement in 1922.
1922 They then purchased a home in Holbrook where they lived the rest of their lives.
I remember visiting this home many times as a girl. I loved their back screened-in porch with
vines growing over it. To me it represented in some way a quiet, cool place. And I first remember
the sound of the turtle doves at this house, a sound that throughout my life time has been a
sound of peacefulness for me. Most of the homes I lived in were void of trees and much vegetation
of any sort other than the garden whicdh provided us our life substenance and the birds sounded
different.
1939 Ida died Aug. 24, 1939 in Holbrook.
1941 Cy died on Nov. 6, 1941 in Holbrook.
