This is Ed Reinig's Written Story of the Reinig Emigration
The story as written below is from Joyce Reinig's notes: Reinig-Stein Genealogy Charts

"Edgar Reinig recalls the following as told to him by his grandfather Jacob.

"Jacob, John, and sisters left Germany because of "conscription." Their mother had died and their father had been killed in an alley. The courts had taken away their land. They came to America secretly to avoid the draft into the German army. They were to be sponsored by a family in Shelby County, Iowa.

"According to Cecilia (Reinig) Gass, they crossed over into the Netherlands to get out of Germany and it was from there they got passage to America. Ed relates that their accommodations were in the animal hold of the ship. (Live animals were taken to butcher later for food for the trip.)

"The youngest, Mathias, did not come to America at that time as he was too young. He is supposed to have stayed with relatives and came over at a later date. Jacob is said to have been 17 years of age. So that would make their emigration about the year of 1875. Jacob's and Mathia's birthdates are verified from grave markers in the cemetery at Portsmouth, Iowa.

"The eldest son, John, was given charge of the money to buy their food and available supplies, but he was very strict in handing it out. As a result, the children were nearly starved when they arrived in the United States, as well as being very frightened of what might be in their future."

Portsmouth, Iowa -- From: Wikipedia
The land on which Portsmouth stands was originally owned by William Williams, who built a log cabin home there in the 1860s. The early settlement grew to be known as the "Cologne Settlement" and in 1886 it moved into Portsmouth. The town began its existence with the coming of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railway and on August 8, 1882 the Milwaukee Land Co. platted the land for the city.
