Circa 1916 | ||||||||
John Edward Reinig was born on April 26, 1894 in Shelby Co., Iowa, son to
Jacob and Barbara (Ludwig) Reinig.
He died November 11, 1918 in France in WWI -- the day an Armistice had
been declared to end the war. He was 23 years old. He had not married. John, a private, was killed in action during the battle of Verdun, the final battle of WWI. The Armistice of 11/11/1918 that ended the war had already been declared, but news of it had not yet reached the battlefield. 700,000 persons were killed in the terrible battle of Verdun. The family did not receive the news of his death until December 5, 1918. John's father, Jacob, had once come from Trier, Germany - not far distant from Verdun, France -- and so the family elected to have John buried in the cemetery in the Argonne Muesse as they said he wasn't all that far from Jacob's original home. A large crucifixion memorial is erected in St. Mary's cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa - near where his parents are buried. |
