The Wind

July 4, 2011

Long ago...
I took a walk down to the lake...
Just to take a walk...
Just to think...
Just to get away...

I walked for some time
Along the shore...
Driftwood...
Trash...
The smell of frogs and fish...
Weeds...
Sand and dirt...
A few rocks...

The wind picked up...
Coming from the south...
With dark clouds on the horizon...
And a good long walk back home.

The wind...
The wind...
I loved the wind...
I spent so much of my childhood outside
That the wind and trees and grass
Were like home to me...
I loved to feel the wind.

But... this wind...
Was so strong that I had to lean into it...
No hope standing upright...
It was a push... push... push...
To break through that wind...

It felt real...
Going against the wind...
The wind in my face...
The force of it fighting against me...
Making every step an effort
As if my legs were weighed down
And my feet were pushed backwards
As I lifted them.
It felt so real.
