Stop The Carousel

1970's ?

I don't know if it's sad
I don't know if it's really true
I don't care if it's bad
I just know that I care about you.

Any time that you'd ask
I would come, and be glad for you
At the drop of a hat
I would run just to hold you.

Chasing horses
To the music
I can't catch you
Stop the carousel!

Standing here at the foot of the mountain
Taking strides that might make me fall
I'm surrounded by clouds on the hillside
Is it too far to have it all?

I don't know if it's true
If it's wise or if it's just a lark
I would do it, but you
Just leave me standing in the dark.

Cheated of moments
Confused by the chatter
The selfish encounters
The careless behavior
The proud resolutions
The quiet avoidance
The rushed conversations
The times I sit alone.

When you let me be near you
I'm warmed by your loving
I want you to touch me
I follow your footsteps
I listen for whispers
My life is a shambles.

Chasing horses
To the music
I can't catch you
Stop the carousel!

If you just take my hand
Who knows - we could climb that mountain
Once we understand
Looking on... it will all be certain.

I can forgive you
And I can remember you
I can hate you
And I can still love you.
