Me And Mine

1990's

My things belong to me.
What I am...
And how I became such...
Or not...
Are my province.
I owe no explanation to anyone
Unless I choose it to be so.
Anyone who might demand such...
Is robbing me of my right
To reveal... as I please...
At the time and way of my own choosing.

One of the drawbacks of being "unmarried"
Has been that...
Any man who gets the merest notion...
Considers it his right
To delve into my life.
I say "hello"
And my life becomes invaded
By all sorts of sordid strangers
Who might want...
Who might want to take advantage.

I had so many things to explain...
But they were not for everyone's ears.
Not everyone can understand
The intricacies of a human life...
Not everyone can believe
Or bother with the hard work of understanding.
I wouldn't have wasted explanations
On the ears of anyone who did not bother...
Who did not bother to know me.

I think the biggest problem
Is that most people are quite confused.
They have no idea what love is.
They have no idea what truth is.
They have no idea what relationships are.
If they did...
They would realize that... at the end of the day...
Some things do not matter.
What was true yesterday... with someone else...
Is not at all true today... with someone who knows.
Life is different in a hurricane
Than it is in a safe harbor.

What does love do...
What does it do.
No one's opinion counts but your own.
No one can live your life for you.
No one can advise you.
Love teaches... you don't need advice.
Love teaches everything.
And love should only be given...
To one who understands.
The problem is...
What you find yourself compromising.
There are many ways to live life...
And sometimes love will change that...
Thus... requires... a measuring of your life.

In my mind...
Marriage happens between two people.
It is the time of choosing freely.
It can't be based on lies...
Or cheapened with acts that dishonor it.
The ceremony is only a comfort for everyone.
It makes things... more real.
The ceremony only restates truths already known.
Vows aren't so much promises...
As they are... truths you've learned.

Love is that thing that surpasses understanding.
It has nothing to do with beauty.
It has nothing to do with earning a living.
It has nothing to do with having a good sex partner.
Love is what opens your heart...
And opens the door to living truth.
Whatever shape or form that person might have
Matters not at all.
It is the act of being born into truth
That holds your heart...
That bonds you forever...
Without which... all things die.
And after which...
You begin your walk... step by step...
Toward all truth.
