Heartbreak

October 2, 2011

For so long
I couldn't watch...
I couldn't listen...
I wouldn't even look...
At... you.
Was that... you?

The world was a circus...
And all the players
Played their clown parts...
Said their scripted say...
Made their ironic points...
Offered their sage advice...
Spoke their unspeakable secrets...

And... I took it in.
I heard the words.
I took the punches
As I suffered...
Dying in my shoes.
I watched the comedy...
And the tragedy...
Unfold around me
Like the momentum of a wheel
That no one could stop
And no one... could hear.

Ha... keepers of light!
Ha... priests of freedom!
Ha... heroes of life itself!
All... clowns.

Yet... still... I knew...
They were the voices of life
Calling to me...
Calling to me...
I could hear nothing but their echoes.

I heard them.
Beneath their insideous masks
Reside the sufferings of the world...
A world sinking in quicksand...
A world stuck in ignorance...
A world eager... to blame...
Not knowing who...

But... I couldn't listen... to you.
I couldn't bear to hear it... from you.
Now... courage intact...
I watch and listen.
I watch the heartbreak.

It is very hard to watch.

Dreams... are strange things.
As we grow older
We accept what our life became...
And think of our dreams as... fantasies...
Sometimes... we get close...
Sometimes... life takes us
Far away from what was once
Our sweet, sweet home.
And... reality... replaces hope...

How ever that it might have been...
If dreams had... come true...
We can never know
Where it all would have taken us...
Perhaps to a place
Where dreams go to die.

For us... there is a huge canyon...
Full of heartbreak...
Full of... not knowing...
Full of... lonliness...
Full of... worry for the world...
Full of... the noses of clowns
And the dung of elephants...
All... put into words.

It is very hard... to watch.
