Alfred W. Woolman

Myrtle Harlan married Frank Woolman, son of Alfred W.
They were the parents of Beulah Woolman; grandparents of Joyce Wolfe


Alfred. W. Woolman 1842-1921; farmer, shoe cobbler, teacher, talented organist

1842 --- Alfred was born May 27, 1842 in Leicester, St. Margaret, Leicestershire, England.
1851 --- English census lists him living w/ parents at 9 Metcalf Street in Leicester.
1860 --- He married Emma Smith on April 9, 1860.
1864 --- May 13, 1864 daughter Clara is born.
1867 --- June 20, 1867 son, Arthur B. is born.
1868 --- March 1, 1868 daughter Bertha is born.
1870 --- December 18, 1870 son Arthur died.
1871 --- March 31, 1871 son Arthur C. is born.
          --- October 1871, left England for America with brother William and Joseph Rowe
          --- filed a declaration of intent to become an American citizen in Lincoln, Nebraska.
          --- filed homestead papers; 80 acres, Section 28, Leicester township, Clay Co., Nebraska
          --- December of 1871, Emma and three children left England to join Alfred in America.
1872 --- March 4, 1872 son Arthur C. died.
1873 --- November 25, 1873 daughter Maud married John Bent.
          --- Alfred became a school teacher for District 17 School of Hastings, Nebraska.
1874 --- August 25, 1874 daughter Ida is born.
1875 --- September 6, 1875 granddaughter Elizabeth Bent died.
1876 --- October 10, 1876 he received his naturalization papers and became a U.S. citizen.
1877 --- February 6, 1877, he paid the final amount needed to receive a clear title to his
                  80 acres in Leicester township. Feb 24, he received clear title.
          --- filed homestead papers on property in Scoville township, Hamilton County, Nebraska,
                  but cancelled his application.
          --- On August 11, 1877 his son George was born.
1879 --- September 19, 1879 his son, Frank, was born.
          --- This was the year that he served as clerk for Hastings New Congregational Church.
1880 --- Census shows him living in Clay County, Nebraska.
1881 --- The Hastings City Directory shows him as owner of "Little Shoe Store."
          --- His daughter Clara was clerk.
1882 --- On February 15, 1882 daughter Blanch was born.
1883 --- October 9, 1883 he purchased William Woolman's original 80 acres from Joseph Rowe.
          --- In December his daughter Clara married Stanford Worthing.
1884 --- October 25, 1884 he sold William's 80 acres to a Mr. Blake.
1885 --- March 22, 1885 daughter Edna is born.
1888 --- February 15, 1888 daughter Bertha married William Morris.
1890 --- August 11, 1890 he purchased 160 acres in Glenwood township, Phillips County,
                  Kansas from Ezra and Hanna Whitney.
1900 --- U.S. Census lists them as living on the farm in Kansas.
1907 --- Sold the Kansas farm to son George and Ludi Woolman, and bought a house in
                  Republican City, Nebraska.
          --- October 1907, Alfred and Emma left by train for Hayward, California for the winter
1910 --- U.S. Census shows them living in Republican City, NE.
1911 --- September 15, 1911 Alfred and family moved from the parsonage into their new
                residence in the west part of town.
1912 --- May 3, 1912 Alfred left for England to visit with family. Emma did not go.
                He returned in August.
                In November of 1912 he re-purchased the 160 acres in Kansas from his son, George.
1917 --- They returned to Hayward, California for the winter.
1918 --- January 1, 1918 Emma died and was buried at Star Cemetery in Hayward.
1919 --- April 1, 1919 he sold the Kansas farm to Frank and Myrtle Woolman
          --- and returned to England to live.
          --- In September 1919 he married widow Maria Smith.
1921 --- He had eye surgery and on November 21, 1921 he died.
