George Harlan(d)

His story George was one of three known sons of James Harland of Bishoprick "nigh Durham, England." His brothers were Thomas and Michael. He was baptized 1, 11, 1650 at the monastery at Monkwearmouth. He remained in Bishoprick until manhood, and then, with his brother Michael emigrated to Ireland, County of Down. In 1687, with his wife, Elizabeth Duck, and four children- and his unmarried brother Michael, he boarded a ship in Belfast and emigrated to Pennsylvania in America. George Harlan soon became one of the foremost citizens of the colony. He had been one of the Provincial governors of the "three lower counties" - now in the state of Delaware- in 1695, and was a member of the Colonial Assembly in 1712. |
