Third Generation

THOMAS HARLAND - Yeoman, Friend (Quaker)

Born "Nigh Durham, in Bishoprick, England," where he remained until early manhood when with his brothers and others he crossed over into Ireland and located in the Parish of Donnahlong, County Down. It is supposed that he remained there during life, and that he was buried in the burying grounds at the Lurgan Meeting House, County Armagh.

1680 - Thomas married 2nd month, 7, 1680, to Katherine Bullock by ceremony of Friends at Lurgen Meeting, held then "at the house of Francis Robson," in the parish of Sego Co. Armagh. Katherine was of the parish of Donnahlong.

They were parents of:
one son, Ananias, and four daughters, Rebecca, Patience, Christian, and Katherine.

1702 - Thomas (m.2), 11th month, 8, 1702 to Alice Foster, Armagh County.
They were parents of two sons, James and Thomas, and one daughter, Abigail.

The names of George Harland, Alphonsus Kirk, etc. were found among the signers to Thomas Harland's first marriage certificate but it seems that this brother did not venture to the new world. He remained in Ireland, but fifty years later some descendents crossed into Pennsylvania and settled in Chester County.

GEORGE HARLAND   1650-1714   Yeoman, Quaker
(3rd generation)

1650 - baptized, 1, 11, 1650 at the Monastery of Monkwearmouth. He was born "nigh Durham in Bishoprick, England," and remained there until manhood.

Grown man -In company with his brother Michael, and others, he crossed into Ireland and located in the County of Down.

1678 - married- 9, 17, 1678 Elizabeth Duck by ceremony of Friends.
Signers to their marriage certificate were: Henry Hollingsworth, Wm. Porter, John Calvert, Timothy Kirk, Elizabeth Harland, Roger Kirk, Alphonsus Kirk, Robert Hoope, Elinor Hoope, Deborah Kirk, Thomas Harland.

Elizabeth Duck was the daughter of Ezekeliah Duck and Hannah Hoope of Shankill, Aramagh, Ireland. Their first four children were undoubtedly born in Ireland and in 1687 George brought his family to America, where their five other children were born.

At the time of residence in Ireland, William Penn was urging Friends of England to become settlers upon his lands, cautioning them, however, against "leaving their own country out of idle curiousity or of a rambling disposition." Names mentioned before were found later in the new world, so they were not without friends when they made their settlement near the Delaware (River).

1687 - In the early months of the year 1687, in company with his wife and four children - and his brother, Michael, then unmarried - he took ship at Belfast for America. They had bought lands before coming which were within that part of the Province of Pennsylvania now embraced in the county of New Castle (now in Delaware State) and settled near the present town of Centerville. Here the elder brother remained for some years.

1695 - George Harlan soon became one of the foremost citizens of the colony. He had been one of the Provincial governors of the "three lower counties" - now in the state of Delaware- in 1695,

1698/99 - Having purchased higher up the Brandywine Creek, he moved his family and settled in Kennet Twp., what is now Pennsbury Township, Chester County, PA.

1701 - While living there in Pennsbury, George Harlan had for neighbors a settlement of Indians who lived in the "Great Bend" of the Brandywine. After they had gone he obtained, in 1701, a warrant for 200 acres of the land in the bend, which was granted to him "in regard for the great trouble and charge he had borne in fencing and maintaining the same for said Indians while living thereon."

1712 - was a member of the Colonial Assembly in 1712.

1714 - He died 5th month (July), 1714, and was buried beside his wife in the new burying grounds known as the Center Meeting Burying Grounds.
