Quoting Nathan Breede again,
"Father, (James Harlan) was born in North Carolina. He was seven or eight years old when
his father (Aaron) left there. I have often heard him tell of his father being burned out. He said
he owned a black hen, she had nest in the wheat mow, and was setting on the nest when the
barn was fired. He did not remember that he cared for the barn, only for the hen. But before
the fire got to her she came to a crack in the log barn and flew out."
He also remembered hearing the officer telling his mother that he would burn the house.
She said, "Won't thee wait till I can get my things out?"
He replied, "Be quick! We don't wait long on rebels."
