Henry Barton Harlan 1874-1960 -- Author; Farmer; Post Office Employee
1874 - Born Aug. 16, 1874 in Waverly, Nebraska
As a young boy "Bart" tried to sail the Republican River - destination, Gulf of Mexico.
A rapid fall of the river left the crew stranded at Superior, Nebraska. The crew separated. Bart
headed for Dwyer, Tennessee by rail where an uncle lived. He reached there in August and worked
for Tilson Harlan Mfg. Co. for two years.
1897 - He rejoined his family in 1897 and two years later he was married.
1899 - Oct. 18, 1899, married Ivy Mownson in Kansas.
Ivy was born in 1881 in Republican City, NE;
daughter of Mathias Mownson, b. 1850 in Copenhagen, Denmark
and Rachel Copeland, b. 1854 in New York
1906 - He managed grain elevators before deciding to go west.
This family moved to Corvallis, Oregon in April of 1906.
1908 - Barton started working for the U.S. Post Office in 1908; retired in 1939.
1939 - He bought land and developed it into a profitable fruit and nut farm.
1943 - He sold out in 1943.
1944 - He bought another 18 acres. He improved this and sold it.
1945 - In 1945, they moved to Los Angeles and were there at their deaths.
1960 - Barton died Sept. 12, 1960 in Hawthorn, California.
1967 - Ivy died May 28, 1967, in Hawthorn, California.
Bart is the author of "As I Remember Nebraska" and was a writer of stories for the
Nebraska Farmer magazine for many years. For an outstanding portrayal of life in the prairies
of the new frontier, this is a great work to read.
(I have in my possession an (THE) original manuscript).
