The mood was friendly
The people were interesting
I was brave in some ways, in my youth
Facing a new world of people
Who were growing up around me
I had ideals of romance and life
I longed for them like anyone.
I wasn't looking for it
But I found I had been led to it
Again and again
An element of surprise in it
An element of humiliation
An element of helplessness
An element of truth
All linger there
In the dark back rooms of life.
