Old Fashioned Dying

1992

We are so modern.
We make things so fancy.
We can beautify anything...
Even death.

What did they do
When men died before?
Out in the wilderness?
On fields of battle?
Poor men who had no way?

Dug a hole
And laid it down...
Gone to the earth wrapless...
Wrapped in earth...
Hugged by dirt...
Back to the earth alone...
Surrounded by nothing.

Precious entity gone to earth...
Breathless...
Changes the living...
Humbles us mortals...
Humbles the one that lays it down.
