Roadkill

September 15, 2015

A lovely little white kitten... about the size of a chihuahua... had haplessly wondered into the road... or had been thrown into the street by someone getting rid of a litter of unwanted kittens... or... perhaps... it had been clipped by a car... and landed right there... smack in the middle of the road.

I saw it ahead of me... in the middle of my lane of traffic... the inside lane of a four-lane busy city street. It had been injured... and could not move. I slowed my pace down... in case it tried to dash under one of my wheels.

As I passed over the injured kitten... it looked me straight in the eye... and it was terrified... seeing my vehicle coming towards it... its eyes... wide... its mouth... open. I remember that look of terror... absolute terror... as my car drove safely over it... without hitting it again... safely under my car.

I think about it now... that maybe... I should have stopped and braved the traffic... and saved the kitten. Maybe I thought that it was beyond saving... and that is why I continued on... to my destination... undetered.

Another innocent victim of the wave of automobiles... the never-ending stream of automobiles... with occupants going through their busy busy lives. Our lives... now too busy... to be concerned about... other things... like little animals.

I've seen patches of fur... on some streets... a dog... or a cat... that got run over and mushed into a furry pancake on the dirty dirty road. I've seen deer... along the road. I've seen big dogs and little dogs... cats... birds... and of course... there have been people... too.

Thousands of human beings die every month in our country... victims of automobiles. We speak of how many soldiers have died in wars... several thousand over several years... as if it were a great loss... a tragedy... a shame. We honor the dead... who died doing their duty... for the strategists who sit in offices... devising strategies.

How is it... that we do not look at these numbers and feel intense shame at it...? that so many die... are injured for life... are maimed and crippled... scarred... and mangled...? How is it... that this has become acceptable...? like passing over a lovely kitten... as though... it was just another "collateral damage" to our need to get to where we are going... AT ANY COST...??? How is this...??

Have we become so numbed... and accepting... that we have not cried out with a mighty voice... "END THIS MADNESS"...?????

How many lives would be saved by developing a MODERN transportation system...?
How many people who drink and drive... would now have other options...? safe options...?
How many people who need to work... but have no car... could find work...??
How many handicapped people... could get to their destinations... easily...??

And so... automobiles rule the road... and no one else should dare to cross their paths.
All else... becomes unimportant... so that we can have our cars... like snapping our magic fingers... and being where we are going... in a magic instant... without ever rubbing shoulders with a stranger.

Maybe we... the drivers and riders in those cars... are... roadkill, too.
Life is... going by... so fast... and we are whooshing with it... not bothering to stop... to care... for an injured animal... even a lovely little white kitten.
