House of Cards

June 18, 2015

I saw a sign.
It said, "25% renewables by 2025."

Well, now... that sounds almost optimistic, doesn't it...?
But... when we see what lies before us... the optimism will be quite short-lived.
If the American public really, really understood... they would surely panic.
If the American public really, really saw the truth of it...
They might create their own Armageddon... a nightmare of temporary insanity.

What... politicians... would do this... to a country they loved...?
What... corporations... would do this... to their eventual... bottom line...?
They are breeding their own demise...
And can't see the forest for the trees. That forest... is burning.

I'm not a socialist.
I believe in the American system given to us... given to humanity... by some very bright men. And... I believe that "capitalism" is a natural social system. People have skills... and ideas... and they offer it to society as a service... and compete to become the best and thus the more profitable. Those who perform a labor... of any level of skill... have the right to ask for fair compensation for their time and efforts. This creates a sense of justice... fairness... joy in our work... joy in our lives... joy in our families.

But... the only way these systems function healthfully... is when honesty... and fact... prevail. It is when government becomes secretive... and fearful... that it begins to fail. It is when the business world... functions without a moral component... like a snake oil salesman moving from town to town... that society fails. And... it is inevitable... that they will... fail... of their own doing.

The government and powerful corporations have worked... in sync... to perpetuate an IDEAL that is a dysfunctional model of society... a dysfunctional model of life itself. In the building of a system that must produce JOBS for a growing population... and produce sellable goods... to produce more JOBS... to maintain an economy that pays TAXES... in order to provide services that are distributed by bureaucracies that provide GOVERNMENT JOBS for a growing population who need jobs... to buy all those many things that will create a dreamworld of convenience...
WHOEVER it was that dreamed this up... begot a monster.

In order to make money... to produce sellable goods... to provide jobs for a growing population... it was important to acquire natural resources very cheaply. It was important to provide the BANANA at a cheap price... and thus... it was important to control the governments where all these BANANAS and all these minerals and resources... were. But... Americans were taught to expect a dream world... and so... empire... was born.

In order to plan for the future... of a growing population... in order to perpetuate this dream... this ideal of life... things couldn't last forever. If... you could buy something of such quality that you would never have to buy another for your lifetime... this system wouldn't get enough business to perpetuate the cycle of jobs... taxes... money... exchanges in the marketplace. The ratio of people to products... did not add up to be sufficient to perpetuate this system.

Inefficiency... cheap quality... jobs done wrong so that they must be done all over again... infrastructure that had a limited lifespan... or which was built with known hazardous materials... or built with known cheap materials... that must be constantly maintained... and serviced... became the order of the day.
Modern society... became a house of cards.

When we had the technology...
to wean away from fossil fuels... that we fight wars over... paid by taxes...
the technology to create a marvelous transportation system for all to use...
transportation safe from the hazards wrought by cars and their drivers...

When we had the technology...
to create an energy grid not vulnerable or toxic or becoming delapidated...
to build homes that did not require constant maintenance and temperature control...
to develop agriculture that provided easily for the needs of a growing population...
agriculture that did not destroy the soil from its abuse...

When we had the technology... to advance as a society... clean... healthy... whole...
what was chosen... was...
a self-perpetuating cycle of powerful and wasteful corporate business.

We've become like drug addicts... who revere the pusher who provides our fix.
It is way past the time for a new vision of life.
We have the ability to free ourselves from such madness... if we but dare to do it.

Within the same framework of our lives... same government and economy...
we can begin to find our answers...
and it won't take another century... if... we had another century to waste.
Advancement of a healthy society needn't be traumatic...
nor done in the madness of desperation.

There should have never been the threat of social trauma at our doorstep to make those changes. There should have never been a DOOMSDAY looming in our future... a doomsday of drought and desperation... where truth disappears from our lives... and peace can only be found in a psychological denial of reality... and psycho-active drugs... like some religion that is full of deep mysteries we could never understand. There should have never been a reality so very hard to face... and deal with... around that next door.

And so... with an end in sight...
of natural resources... and easily attained resources...
with the end of countries happily being overwhelmed by the power of our country...
and... with a natural environment...
recklessly and irresponsibly polluted in order to obtain those natural resources...
and... with a natural environment...
whose cycle of perpetuating life is being taken apart and destroyed piece by piece...
with an end in sight...
of the inevitably fully ransacked and plundered planet...
we must... and we can... still find our way safely home.

There are millions of people who do not wish to participate in this madness. There are millions of people who are homeless... who have learned to function outside of this madness. There are millions of self-sufficient people who could function happily and healthfully outside of this madness. Some people may not think well of such people as these... but they are our salvation.

In order for this madness to wind down gradually... those people who wish to live self-sufficient lives... who only need the means and the land to do it on... to get it built... those people can be used as a natural resource to begin a new chapter in human history... a chapter based on health and wholeness and peace. They could show the rest of us how to do this.

Those millions of people would not need jobs... to buy trivial products that they really do not need... that must be replaced regularly. And... the gears of business can wind down to a healthy pace... a human pace. With solutions being found for energy to maintain a level of health and comfort for these people... develop housing solutions... transportation solutions...
the investment would have a dividend of a genuinely free society... a genuinely stable society... and a drastically more stable world.

To continue as we have been doing...
living so wastefully... detached from these realities...
leaving mounds of trash and waste to rot into a toxic stew out of control...
creating oceans of acidic waste...
to spew waste into the air and into the rivers... and into our bodies and our babies...
the toxins which make us ill... needing healthcare... that employs more people...

To continue as we have been doing... is absolute sociopathic madness.

I saw a sign.
We don't have time to achieve "25% renewables by 2025"...
we should have been at 90% renewables 20 years ago.
It can be done. Don't believe anyone if they tell you that it can't.
There... are... easy... answers...
if we will only take advantage of our last chance for sanity.

If we don't... none of us will want to be around...
when this house of cards... falls.
