Eric Holder... Redeemed...?

March 4, 2015

Was it just last month...? that I heard myself saying...
"Attorney General Eric Holder gave the Wall Street criminals a pass... not one of them has gone to jail for their crimes."

Yeah... I heard myself saying it.
And so... today... as I listened to him... again... giving a pass to police officers who had committed grave civil rights crimes... that resulted in the systemic harm of an entire community... well... I was ready again to bust out with my rhetoric about what a wuss he really is about crime and criminals. Then I held my words...

Was it in his gentle manner that I saw it...?
Was it when he mentioned his brother...? that I saw it...?
Did the memory of his family's record on civil rights... come to mind...?
All of the above... and more...?

As I listened to Mr. Holder's scathing report on the Ferguson, Missouri justice system... and heard the details of all that was wrong with it... how it was institutionally bad from the creation of laws and codes to the processing of enforcement... I realized that Ferguson had actually become... South Africa of the 1950's.

It occurred to me... the process of reconciliation... of correcting bad systems... of how "Correctional Facilities" are created to CORRECT the bad behaviors of members of our societies... and that the ultimate goal of laws and enforcement of laws is to ensure a civil society for the rest of the population to function in... and thrive.

Was it some caveman instinct still in me...? to relish the idea of revenge...? on the criminals who caused such havoc and harm in our society...? ... a caveman instinct to want a human being to suffer EQUALLY in the harm they have caused or have been a part of...? Is this... a desire from a lower instinct... that makes even ME guilty...? for hoping for revenge...? suffering...? blood-letting...?

My... my... but... haven't we seen quite a bit of this... "righteous revenge"... in the torture of people who may or may not have been part of acts of terrorism...? or whose belief systems perpetrate such crimes regularly upon persons who violate moral codes of their societies...? and who would consider LESS punishment... an act of moral absence...?

Today's speech by Eric Holder... may be one of his last acts as U.S. Attorney General. And... it was truly a beautiful speech... refraining from caveman rhetoric of law suits and criminal charges... which bring with them suffering and costs on all of us. But... the speech was in no ways a pass. The speech was... like a warm wind from a god of truth... who knows... that...

it is more important to get about... creating a healthy tree... creating a healthy society... than it is to get stuck in the never-ending arguments of how sick... parts of our society really really are. It is a sickness in humankind that things such as this are allowed to fester... and the goal is... to get to that healthy and whole place... without perpetuating even more sickness.

After all... it is the sickness that we are seeking to correct... the sickness that makes otherwise good people... do some very sick things.

Thank you, Attorney General Eric Holder... for the leap of evolution.
