The 1950's and 1960's were alive with change of all kinds. Fashions across the board...
as well as in clothing and hairdo's... were creative and interesting. The world was
glorying in all things "modern."
Capitalism... innovation... technology... all were pushing the culture into wider and
more interesting products and ideas. Were we all so naiive as to believe that the culture
itself...! would not change with it...?
When I gave all this some thought... I really found the foundations for culture change
going quite a ways back in time. Although women's rights groups rejected men who
"patronized" them... opening doors... protecting them... among the complaints... I saw
this "male chauvenism" as the real beginning of women's rights. That women were to
be respected and protected... rather than treated like dogs... was a step forward for us.
Being treated like a child... was an improvement on being treated like a dog.
And... the culture change of the "roaring twenties" was a huge step away from the
prudish mores of the victorian era. And then... during WWII... swing dance was some
of the riskiest forms of culture change. Our parents paved the way for the next
generation to spread their wings and fly. And romance was NEVER out of style.
Romance... was celebrated... and everyone wanted some. And with the great boom
in magazine publishing... it was inevitable that the culture would see more riske'
magazines... movies... books.
The alternative culture to all this... was beatniks. Modern architecture had become more
sleek... less elaborate and decorative... in this new modern metropolis of life... and thus, too...
the beatnik culture... became more simple... and less extravagant. Function... truth...
self-reflection... poetry in life... was like a great mathematical structure finally being
reduced to its more simple definition.
Life was finding... meaning. I loved it.
Even the Catholic church loved it. Folk songs about justice, peace, and freedom were
inspiring... and the church would offer folk Masses to bring it to their members. Folk
music was the music that played as the background for an emerging civil rights struggle.
The Catholic schools were being integrated... and priests and nuns joined in marches to bring
the plight of the American negro to national attention.
And the power of television brought change to the modern landscape. We could no longer
sit in our own little suburban cruise ships and ignore it. Like it or not... we were being compelled
to grow up... to look at the world around us... to face up to the injustices that had been
allowed to propagate out of sight for too too long. History wasn't a story about the
Napolianic Wars... history was being made all around us... we were living in it.
I think that one of the great misconceptions that we... as a society... have lived under...
is that... there has to be just ONE way to do things... or that EVERYONE has to do the
same thing as everyone else. It simply isn't possible. People will always have many
differing versions of life. But... differing beliefs can co-exist.
There is no... PERFECT. "Perfect" would only be... TYRANNY.
If one group believes in creative sexuality... it shouldn't be construed that the whole of
society must submit to it. Freud may have had some
bad math when he simplified life down to repressed sexual urges. The solution is not
a free-for-all. The solution is respect and understanding... and genuine love. His
equation did not simplify far enough. He didn't understand the power of genuine love.
Yes... we needed to grow up and realize that everyone
born on this earth has a right to exist in peace... a right to find their own way... but
it didn't mean that we all had to end up doing the same thing... or that anyone was
MORE right doing one thing than someone else doing something different.
The requirement was just to understand what it was you were doing yourself...
know what was right or not right... and go from there.
After having spent centuries and centuries being "obedient"... one might think that
society would glory in the freedom to choose our own way... to find our own truths.
Obedience... is easy. Being told what to do... is easy. Taking the trouble to actually
learn and understand... and then make choices... THAT... isn't easy.
It takes thought and understanding... to imagine how repressed it has been to be a
woman... always at the will of a husband... always diminished for her achievements...
always denied the pursuit of her own dreams... her own hopes... treated like a silly
child in an emotional state. But... one must take the trouble to think... to understand.
It takes thought and understanding... to imagine how life has been for American
negroes... who were deprived of even the simplest education... who lived in the fear
that the slightest show of disrespect towards a white person might mean their very
life... and to experience respect for their own selves... being something quite strange and
suspicious. But... one must take the trouble to think... to understand.
It takes thought and understanding... to imagine the confusion and fear of a person
who is discovering that... they can't see an attraction in the "opposite sex." We must
realize that there are people who think of the opposite sex the way other people
think of the same sex... totally unnatural to them. Whether it is born in them... or
whether their environment has produced this in them... they find no comfort in the
idea of marrying someone of the other sex. We may never fully understand their
reasons... but we must take the time to think... to understand that there are... reasons.
We can no longer ignore each other in our modern world... and we must find a way
to live together. How easy it all was... to have age-old beliefs... never having to wonder
how wrong or unjust those beliefs may have been. But... just like the civilized world
has insisted that cannibals change their ways... that head-shrinker tribes change their
ways... that brutality cease on this planet... so, too... must our hatreds and injustices
cease on this planet... no matter what the reason... or the justification.
We must learn to live together.
It was the refusal to end injustices... that inspired communism. The idea that
communism was MORE appealing than the tyranny of the money masters...
must give us all pause. The concept of communism seems... at first... to be the
MODERN world's solution to the haphazard nature of capitalism... a solution
to the hidden slavery of wage work... to the intolerability of poverty and
suffering. But on a large scale... such a solution is worse than the problem it
was meant to solve. It is mass slavery.
Communist solutions... on a small voluntary scale... may well be an answer to
various unjust systems. I can well see how farming would work better as a group
effort. That doesn't mean that I believe that ALL farms must revert to a communist
system... just that... farming requires many hands at work... and all could reap
the full rewards of their efforts. It could be done with a contract.
People who have worked to make something succeed are entitled to a piece of the
pie... not a slave wage... not to have their hard work sold and scrapped by a money
master. People who have worked at something... and have loved their work...
want to be more than an end-of-the-line reject... watching some untrained money
master reap the rewards of treating them like dogs... to be used up and discarded.
The money masters have propagated brutality and injustice everywhere. They have
considered that it was the work of their MONEY... that gave us this modern world.
They haven't taken the time to think... to understand... that it was a GROUP effort.
They have acted as though MONEY gave them rights to reke injustice wherever
they pleased... to destroy as they pleased... to cause war and suffering on the
powerless. They are no better than cannibals.
Do corporations that underpay their workers realize... that it is their policies that
have begotten socialism...? People who trade their hard work for a monetary reward
should be paid enough to supply all of their essential needs... and more besides. But...
the structure that the money masters claim as their "capitalistic rights" forces those
workers into a welfare system where they will be monitored constantly by a bureacracy.
So... not only are workers... honest workers... paid less than they need to provide for
themselves and their families... they are forced to submit to a welfare system that
intrudes on their lives. The money masters themselves... are acting the part of socialists...
forcing the government to interfere in the lives of working people.
A corporation may be a NON-HUMAN entity... but it still must be required to behave
in a humane and sane manner. When it doesn't... it is nothing better than a monster.
And if it is nothing better than a monster... the civilized world will end it... like it has
ended other forms of cannibalism.
These errant corporations are part of the walking insane. They haven't bothered to stop...
and think... and understand. And for all of their non-human efforts... they become wealthy
and powerful. What... is so great... about a system... like THAT...? Do they
think that we are so insane that we would find that... ACCEPTABLE...?
What kind of person finds constant struggle and hardship... ACCEPTABLE...?
What do the money masters find so appealing about the solution... about anarchy...?
Do we really need another version of insanity...? to fix more injustice...?
Suppose the government classified such errant corporations as public nuisances...
because it has had to constantly step in and relieve the hardship that has put such stress
on the lives of their workers.
These MONSTERS are a nuisance to civil society... like con artists
and common thieves... a nuisance... not an entity entitled to public subsidies or tax relief.
They propagate instability in civil society... and cost the public money. Such things as
those... get outlawed.
And so... with these genius money masters in charge... the world has had war... war against communism... war against brutality...
war against tyranny... war against change... war against equality for all...
war against poverty... war against drugs... war about religion... war about territory...
war about power structures... war about the old ways... war about the new ways...
war... war... war... war... war.
The money masters have prevented us from growing up... and maturing as a society.
All the world ever needed was... justice.
It is the concept of JUSTICE... rightness... righteousness... that we needed to learn.
Britain... needed to learn it.
America, too... needed to learn it.
Any society that considers itself a "civilized" society... needs to learn it.
If we had propagated THAT... there might not have been... so much war.
Even today... society is still pushing back and forth at each other...
thinking OUR way is the right way... that there is a simple choice... one
way or the other... A... B... C... or D. This is not truth. We all belong to the
next choice... OTHER... the OTHER alternative choice yet to be. Because of
the culture war... we haven't matured to the next level... the next choice...
the OTHER category... where there is ultimate freedom... to live our lives as
we can best live them... of our own choice... and in peace.
Is God... against peace...? No.
God... is against VIOLENCE.
And... injustice... is the father of violence.
Like beatniks... we can look around us... reflect on the world... and decide the
essentials... as though they were a part of our Constitution... decide what
justice is... what freedom is... what truth is... what is safe for our planet...
and then... decide how we can achieve it. We must adhere to the basic
essentials of our lives... our survival.
We can create something that is the best of both worlds... simplicity... life essentials...
life rights... justice and truth and happiness for all... and use our modern technology
to give it to us. Every life born on the planet has a right to life essentials.
Money masters ought to realize that this may mean... that they
can only have power over those things that they are willing to accept full
responsibility for. That... includes the full well-being of those people whose lives
depend on the work that they are doing FOR those money masters. It also
means the full well-being of the planet... and our planet's creatures.
We have been running this train at full speed... and it is not sustainable.
The alternative is a world that is truly worth living in... a world simplified...
easy... where all can find a place to rest. We need to find our way to... OTHER.
