October Flowers

October 3, 2014

Last spring I planted a garden with some monkey grass, Impatiens, and some replanted commercial mums. I'd never worked with mums, but I separated them out and had enough to line the edge of the garden with them.

May, June, July, August, September... the mums sat in the garden... with small buds... that grew by millimeters... miniscule millimeters... otherwise they looked like weeds... pretty scrappy weeds, all in all... But... they were MUMS... they would eventually have flowers.

The monkey grass flourished.
The Impatiens flourished... even though they were bought at a huge discount from the hardware store... with sparse blooms at the time. Nevertheless, they kept sprouting new stems for new beautiful blooms... just as natural and as pretty as you please.

All the while... those mums played the ugly game... ugly, ugly, ugly.
But... they were MUMS... they would eventually have flowers.

I enjoyed watching that garden... it really was a pretty garden.
I kept checking on those mums...
will they be blooming soon...? I queried...?
Man, oh, man... were they ugly...

May, June, July, August, Septemeber... ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly... ugly.

And now... it is October...
and they are finally blooming...
and so... when I looked tonight...
and saw that the buds were actually BLOOMING...
with FLOWERS...!!
I realized that... I no longer cared.

I no longer care how pretty they are.
They will bloom for two weeks... then be gone.
They were just too ugly...
for too long.

I don't care how pretty they are.
